I find it strange that the PAE kernel is the ONLY one which gives me
any trouble.
I guess it could be hardware related, but 2.6.38-1 and 2.6.38-2 have both been
booting fine for months.
Is there something about the PAE series that would uncover hardware faults which
may have existed for a long time

Hi,
This problem can be fixed by adding -D_GNU_SOURCE to the CFLAGS in the
rules file. I added a diff file.
I also prepared a NMU but I did not ask for sponsorship yet.

i was mucking with the 'quiet' kernel option (passed via
/boot/grub/menu.lst) and noticed that with 'quiet' the machine has
never managed to power itself off; but without the 'quiet' option the
machine _sometimes_ (like 3 times in a row this morning - but not
since) manages to power off.

But I added that parameter as a troubleshooting step after seeing
similar complaints elsewhere on the Web. (It made no difference.) I
still have the problem with that mptbase.mpt_msi_enable=0 removed.
