I've been having the same problem both with 2.6.7 and 2.6.8 images (always with 686 smp). The problem is directly related to acpi and I was using the parameter "acpi=off" at boot time to solve it. Today, I recompiled the kernel, changing as follows: --- /boot/config-2.6.8-1-686-smp2004-0
