I've just uploaded to unstable a new version of sane-backends which includes a workaround for CONFIG_USB_SUSPEND. This workaround only works with Linux 2.6.22 & up, though. As far as sane-backends (and sane-backends-extras) is concerned, this bug can be closed; the problems we've seen are in fact hardware bugs related to the improper support of USB suspend by most (if not all) USB scanners. The workaround included in sane-backends is only active for scanners supported by sane-backends; other packages like hpoj/hplip or libgphoto may still encounter this problem until they apply a similar workaround.
