(this is actually from 2.6.25-trunk, but is essentially the same as 2.6.24; I have no idea how to submit a bug against the trunk. If I let the output above continue, the system eventually hangs. On the old firewire stack & 2.6.24, it works fine. If the camera is attached directly (not through a hub) it is recognized in 2.6.25 (though unusable in debian).
