I wouldn't want to drop build-needed, as it only complicates things
for the cases where people want it. But I'm happy to add a stanza to
its documentation to avoid it for packages which take a nontrivial
amount of time to build; does that sound like an acceptable
compromise?

It looks like there is no `thinkpad-` package in Ubuntu or Debian, but
several with `think` in them. Does it really make sense to rename this
to `thinkpad`, when there are other packages like
`*-docking` as well.
Let me file an upstream issue in the tracker and let me get back to this.
