I'm trying to understand the PTS source package page of the udev package
(http://packages.qa.debian.org/u/udev.html). The top-most line in the
Latest News section is

i.e. it indicates that the latest version 0.060-1 was

letting users access removable media. The difference is that
pmount allows users to mount and unmount these devices

abilities could/should a tool which is specifically intended for
manual mounting have?

When the device is pulled from the USB port, the script kills all
processes that have been accessing the filesystem and then
unmounts it.
Have you tried the -l option to umount
