Easy question:
Are external firewire drives bootable (like on a 2000 Powerbook)? and is
there support under Linux for firewire drives?

Hello,
One more of those annoying newbies who can't install the thing...
I had Debian Potato (downloaded the ISOs) up and running quite lovely on a
Powerbook G3/Firewire and have now managed to get a spare G4/AGP to run as a
dedicated Linux server. Unfortunately I can't get the darned thing to bo

Quite the opposite. The 2.4 and 2.2 BK kernels are quite stable. The
kernels that Paul keeps around (accessible via rsync) are experiments that
Paul doesn't push up to the BK tree, I believe.

The 1.1.8 JDK is nice and fast if you use the metroworks JIT. Sadly,
there is no JIT yet for JDK 1.3.0 on the PPC, and performance suffers
quite a bit as a result.
Yes, I am currently running JDK 1.3.0 PL 1 and JDK 1.1.8 from Blackdown on
Debian 2.2r2/testing on my PB3400. They work great...

I noticed the other day at www.linuxppc.org/software that there
is a big release of Java JDK from blackdown. Has anybody tried these

In case people are interested in getting a 2.4 kernel to compile *and* work
on their powerbook, here's a quick howto on how I did it.
(info from http://www.linuxppc.org/software/kernel)
$ mkdir linux-pmac-stable
$ cd linux-pmac-stable
$ rsync -avz --delete ppc.linuxcare.com::linux-pmac-devel

Hi,
I'm a new user of Debian/PPC, although I used Debian/i386 for a long
time... and it was a much easier time :-)
Now, I have an iMac rev. D (I think).. it is a blue iMac, with a G3

I've made another attempt to get XF 4.0.2 running on my G3 Powerbook (Pismo).
I downloaded the 4.0.2-4 deb packages from the pool area and installed those.
I'm running kernel version 2.4.2-pre3 (airport and sound works!)
I have "video=aty128fb:vmode:10:depth:8:" in my /etc/yaboot.conf

I'm using X 3.3.36 on potato. Comparing XF86Config files between my debian

On linuxppc, there is no such line, instead:
XkbKeycodes "macintosh"
XbkTypes "defaul

dist-upgrade to current unstable leads to all sorts of weird segfaults on
a dual G4 running a recent 2.4.2pre kernel here, including with locally
compiled apps. One example I have in mind is gkrellm (who works perfectly
well on another box using a slightly older snapshot of unstable).

Do you use apt/dselect? Did it not get all of the new stuff automatically,
from xml to

Hi,
I've noted that grep-dctrl 1.7 is being held from testing because there is an
out-of-date powerpc binary there. According to the link from update_excuses,
the package build was last tried in July 2000 and it failed. I need this
