Wilhelm, Looks like it worked. It failed trying to startup because it set the JAVA_HOME in /etc/default/tomcat4 to /usr/local/j2sdk1.4.0 I went in and changed it to /usr/local/j2sdk1.3.1 and it started. One more really dumb newbie question if you don't mind. Is tomcat all that I need to serve

Hmmm... Okay, it looks like they've changed the name of the java dependency. java-virtual-machine-dummy provides java-virtual-machine, but tomcat depends on java2-runtime (among other choices). and an apt-cache search for java2-runtime reveals nothing, so I don't know what is up with that.
