As far as word processing goes, I think StarOffice is the most popular choice for linux in general... if you think about it, let me know if you get it installed, because I'm not sure about compatibility :) I'm assuming you have a debian cd? In that case, press the option key when rebooting to giv

Using the gnome modem configurations, what init string should I use for the standard internal modem shipped with g4's? Sorry to bother everyone, but I'm not sure how to figure out what it is on my own, and I figured someone could tell me without too much trouble :) Thanks! -Chris

Enlightenment

2001-01-10 Thread Chris Bryan
Alright, this is confusing... it seems I have Enlightenment installed, but I can't invoke it w/ the command enlightenment. What am I doing wrong? Also, is anyone using Enlightenment by itself? (i.e. w/o Gnome) I'm wondering if it is satisfactory to use alone.

Sorry, I sent the message before I was finished ;) I've successfully booted into Gnome, but the only 2 window managers it sees are twm and wmaker, neither of which are satisfactory for using w/ gnome in my opinion. Thanks for the help!

GNOME

2001-01-08 Thread Chris Bryan
On the Gnome website, it says it requires Debian 2.3 or higher. Is this true? And if so, why is it listed in the install packages on the cd? Does anyone have it up and running so that I know it's possible? Thanks so much!

Window Managers, etc

2001-01-06 Thread Chris Bryan
One quick question, which I'm sure is a simple one: how do I change the default window manager? GNUstep is currently the default. I installed the neccessary packages for gnome, I just don't know how to change the configuration. I consulted the debian manual (on the website) to no avail... it must b

Mouse Working in X

2001-01-03 Thread Chris Bryan
After some experimenting, I have discovered the trick to getting my usb mouse to work under X w/o backporting stuff from 2.4. I've posted this to possibly help some other people just installing Debian. The trick is to set the protocol to "IMPS/2" and the device to /dev/usbmouse. I hope this may b

alright everyone, I've gotten a little farther. When I boot into yaboot, it says "boot: " and then "Loading kernel..." but then complains that it "can't find image". Wouldn't this be ramdisk.image.gz? Wouldn't this be ramdisk.image.gz? I've tried loading it manually after that, but still no luck P
