xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk doesn't ship the fbdev driver because it
doesn't support the DRI.

try the 'ati' driver
X runs really poorly in just framebuffer, its not hard to
be tricked into thihking 'x works, so it must be aok'. thats
not true on a mac.
ive got dvds to run on an imac in linux, with all deb packages
