I thought I would share that I got the Apple on-board sound working correctly
on this system after some moderate futzing around, with these settings, and no
additional parts needed:

I have no idea if the patch is correct at all, but I thought it might be
useful for other people experiencing the same problem on their PowerBooks.
For some reason I had to add snd-aoa-i2sbus to /etc/modules to make sure the
snd-aoa-* modules are loaded at startup.

kernel. I filed a bug report a couple of months ago, but nothing's been fixed

This gives a hint about where it all started. Powermac G4 Digital
Audio is a special case. In general, older PPC Macs use snd-powermac
and newer snd-aoa.

Sadly, not. There is no /etc/modutils/sound in wheezy and besides
udev is supposed to take care of loading proper drivers (why can't I
have a choice?!). I love this method of making things better by
breaking them down first.

My guess is that this is some kind of byte order problem, low and high
bytes of the 16 bit sample get swapped. Either the chip gets out of

I then ran mpg321 file.mp3 and no change.
Then i rebooted again and then tried again
and still same problem :(

its not a volume issue. i hear fine just strange sounds. alsamixer set to 99 or
lower for master and stuff for pcm . why would treble and bass have any effect?

As I already told, it works on my iBook with Squeeze (and Ubuntu,
too). I assume yours is a PowerBook6,5, too?
Looks like snd-aoa is not even trying to support this machine, snd-powermac is.
And Ubuntu 10.04 uses the same version of kernel, 2.6.32. But it is
running pulseaudio on top on snd-power

I have an almost identical machine: 1.07 Ghz model iBook G4 (early
2004). So I did two simple tests:
First I changed input to Mic in alsamixer, then recoded some sound:
arecord -f cd t.wav
and played it back:
aplay t.wav
Second I played this file:

I also tried banning the snd-powermac driver and not banning the other drivers

that gave me no sound with an error from Alsa when I tried to run mpg321 etc
however when i then did modprobe snd-powermac
i got the terrible scratching sound and no music or voice as before.

remaining problem with silent Pro Speakers (2.5 mm jack). A patched

I should have added yesterday, external speakers plugged into the 2.5 mm stereo
mini jack sound port still did not work on the PowerMac G4 DA, only the internal
speaker and the headphone jack. Today, after fiddling around with alsamixer
trying to unmute what comes up as two headphone jacks
