Additional to the poor --ldflags, there are issues in --libs as well: $ cups-config --version 1.6.3
$ cups-config --libs shows: -lcups -Wl,-z,relro -lgssapi_krb5 -lkrb5 -lk5crypto -lcom_err -lgnutls -lgcrypt -lz -lpthread -lm -lcrypt -lz However, not only does this include something that looks like it belongs in ldflags, it also shows all the cups dependencies. We don't need these directly, the linker will handle these in-directly, and Samba now ignores --libs for this reason.
