Unfortunately, the latest Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 requires at least 44 MB RAM
[0].
Maybe you could try Debian 4.0 Etch or Etch and half (the oldstable now),
and with a base
system install first (around 24 MB ram) install only lightweight GUI
environments
like XFCE or FVWM, for example.

I tried some distros like dizinha or puppy, but had no success.
