I add an information :
I went back to the former python-matplotlib package (0.98.1-1) and could import
pylab again. So I think there is a problem with python-matplotlib
0.98.1-1+lenny1.1
> upgrade python-matplotlib 0.98.1-1 0.98.1-1+lenny1.1

I recently updated my Debian Lenny. The log file reads :
upgrade python2.5 2.5.2-11 2.5.2-11.1
upgrade python-matplotlib 0.98.1-1 0.98.1-1+lenny1.1
