If a hostname has already been removed from the dynamic DNS server when
dhcp-dns goes to do it's update, it gets an NXDOMAIN reply. This isn't
a problem as the desired results already exist, but a message goes to
STDERR and the cron daemon mails it.

the program goes in to an infinite loop prompting (repeatedly) for the

When SSH2 starts, it tries to read the port number from the config file.
If it is not present, it sets PORT=. However, SSH2 starts on port 22
if that parameter is not set.
This prevents the "stop" and "restart" directives from working:
