gThumb removes already during the tagging of images all extended file
attributes attached to the image, so called xattr.
You can check this by writing tags with "setfattr" and reading them with
"getfattr". Or you can use

FPM is the better way to run PHP IMO. For example, it's automatically restarted
when new PHP modules get installed.
Could you use php-fpm rather then php-cgi?
