The apparent bug turned out to be a change of the default klipper
behaviour to Synchronise contents of the clipboard and the selection.
Setting Separate clipboard and selection fixed the problem I was having.
Maybe the klipper developers should be asked about this?

merging 0.12.1 into KDE 3.5.4. Apparently the KDE_3_5_BRANCH has fixes
