I have a very similar, probably related problem:
When I enter my username and password into KDM, the screen flicks and
KDM is presented again (looks like KDM just restarded). I cannot even
login into metacity or failsave. So my system is quite useless for now.
My last update was this morning, and
sudo cp /etc/X11/Xsession.xfree86 /etc/X11/Xsession
fixed the problem, see #365988 (x11-common: Unable to log in from KDM)
