Package: kdm
Version: 4:2.2.1.0-6
Severity: wishlist
I had some wrong config line in /etc/kde2/kdm/Xservers:
:0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] /usr/X11R6/bin/X -dpi 75 tcp vt7
which caused the X server not to start. The logfile entries were:
Dec 7 12:57:23 tpo2 kdm[507]: Server unexpectedly died
Dec 7 12:57:38 tpo2 kdm[507]: Server for display :0 can't be started,
session disabled
Nevertheless /etc/init.d/kdm did not complain:
tpo2:~# /etc/init.d/kdm start
Starting K display manager: done.
- nothing else happened.
When I:
(strace /etc/init.d/kdm start 2>&1 ) | less
I see that the X server reports to STDERR (?) that it didn't recognize some
option. I
failed to figure out who in the whole chain was responsible for supressing
STDERR so I'd miss that error message from the X server, but it'd be nice
to see some useful feedback in case /etc/init.d/kdm fails to start.
Otherwise the user is pretty much left in the dark about why the system
fails to start.
Thanks,
*t

like any other *dm, you have :
~/.xsession-errors, /var/log/*dm.log, /var/log/{Xfree,Xorg}.0.log
Moreover, kdm also has popups to explain the problem when it guess
which it is.
