Hi [Declaration of possible Conflict of Interest: I am currently an employee of GitLab]
GitLab upstream has asked if we could mention in the description of our Debian package that it is different from the official one they provide, using omnibus. Because both us and them provide package to Debian, and through that to Ubuntu, users may get confused. They had incidents where people using Ubuntu packages reported the issues against upstream package and after long discussion only it was found out that the problem was the native package. What they propose is we simply mention in our one line description is that our package is non-omnibus and maybe add a line or two in the detailed description. Since I too feel this is a harmless modification, I think we can make this change. Moreover this provides better information to the users regarding what they are installing and that it is different from something similar that upstream is providing. I understand the proper response to the user who responded was to ask them to file issue on launchpad, but I wouldn't really blame the user for being confused with two packages. If no one has any objection (please respond by this week), I will change the package description to reflect this information. -- Balasankar C http://balasankarc.in
