As per various responses, the simple solution was to install
sun 24 bit xserver. My (wrong) assumption was that as a
fairly standard Sun box it would install from the CD without
any intervention on my part - I was choosing the "simple"
option and picking the X package

I can confirm this behavior on
I rsync'd the 2.2 source from vger, built the kernel and rebooted, i'm afraid I
get the exact same error.

Those images run perfectly on my U5 box. Except an unresolved symbol for
hp100.o no special issues.
