While I've had some progress with trying to make my Ultra 30 print,
I've had no real success. What I have done so far is
adding the modules, parport_pc and lp. I have also
did MAKEDEV par, MAKEDEV parport, and MAKEDEV lp.

and that is my main prority.
I getting the impression sparc linux isn't there yet and still is some
development stage.
Can I use the kernel-2.4.17 or is this still to new.
I can seem to compile kernels (2.4.18)

Why were you surprised? qmail, while useful, isn't DFSG-free. And
sendmail is pretty much a legacy system :-) (Although in theory it

Two problems. 2.4.18 is not stable on sparc, and gcc-3.0.4 is not very
good on sparc, especially for produ
Thanks everyone.I will be going with Postfix, no one had any complaints
and I was leaning toward Postfix to begin with. I was surprised that no
one was really pushing qmail or sendmail.
Thanks again,

I run exim and found it to be very easy to setup and run. Then again I
only use it for a home office. You would have to look at the exim mail
groups for more information about ISP use.

Thanks to Michael Dänzer for the PowerPC packages, and to
necrotic.deadbeast.net, newly upgraded to 256MB of RAM thanks to Ben
Collins, for the SPARC packages. :)
See the URL in my .sig.
Note to PowerPC users: despite the implications of the 4.2 release
notes, the nv driver is *not* compiled for

Both work just fine on Sparc.

Joseph,
I am not sure what exactly is going wrong, but this is correct for most
other distros, and I bumped my head against it for a while too.
I got the kernel-package deb and used the make-kpkg command to build my
own kernels successfully. Here's the basics:
apt-get install kernel-package
cd
I know this is some what off list. But I work for an ISP and I am looking
to build a new mailserver. I am looking for suggestions on a high volume
mail server. Any Ideas? I would like to stay away from sendmail as the MTA.
Any opinions on Exim or Postfix?
Thanks,
Nick

Hi All
I have recently installed debian on a sparc 20.
I have compiled kernel-2.4.18 without any problems with gcc-3.0.4.
I copy the System.map to /boot/System.map-2.4.18 and vmlinux as
/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18.
I add these to the /etc/silo.conf.
When I try to reboot, I can choose this kernel a
