I've heard that only gcc version == egcs-2.92.11 or gcc versions >=
3.1 are suitable for compiling the kernel. I have been trying to use
a more recent gcc version, but, to my surprise, I found that the
versions >= 3.1 included with sid do not support 64-bit compilation.
The gcc-3.0 supports 64-bit

Has anyone else had trouble installing from CD's on a sparc 10 ? And
if so what did you do to get it install ? I have not had any luck so far and
am still trying, but if anyone else has solved this please give me some
hints.

I was verify9ing a brown bag-type fix on vore yesterday, where the newest
octave2.0 (2.0.17-5) built fine manually. Yet the build fails:
