I've been given a redundant Sparcstation 5 free of charge from an old
colleague. It's been in almost constant use for the last few years and
it booted up normally when I took posession. So, apologies if this is
long, but I figure better to provide all the info up front rather than
waste time

Your are using the wrong driver. The driver that is loaded when X starts

I am a Debian newbie, but it's a realy interessting Linux distribution to
me, because it's running also on SPARC.
The installation in general was without any problems, I also added X and the
GUIs but now I have a real problem to start the X server (startx).

I think it is only an sparc64 Problem. Since sparc64 uses a 64 bit Kernel
and 32 bit Userland there has to be a translater 32/64 bit in ioctl
