Has anyone apart from me built non-iso-8859-1 boot floppies recently?
I found I needed to patch scripts/rootdisk/prototype/etc/init.d/rcS to
get the font loaded, and I sent my patch to debian-boot. But there was
no reaction. So I guess that either no one is interested in

Is bzImage a self-decompressing kernel specific to i386? Try "make
vmlinux" or just "make" instead.

You can do it with fdisk. It's in the manual:
http://www.debian.org/releases/slink/sparc/ch-init-config.en.html#s-dbootstrap-partition
(Does dbootstrap in potato make this any more foolproof?)

I built a cross-compiler on Intel for SPARC from the binutils and gcc
sources, i.e. without using the Debian packages. If you check the
debian-sparc archives I think my recipe's in there somewhere.
(Otherwise ask me and I can probably find it and e-mail it to you
tonight - in about 12 hours.)

Can you remind us of the correct procedure, please, and where that
procedure is described?
The file /etc/init.d/network is, apparently, generated by code in
/usr/src/boot-floppies/utilit

Can anyone explain why the reading and decompressing of the floppy has
to be handled as a real-time task that fails when the processor is too

I get this on i386 using kernel 2.2.10 with Debian 2.1. There is a
slight incompatibility between Debian 2.1's network initialisation
scripts and the 2.2.x kernels. The error is harmless and may be
ignored, as far as I know, though it would be nice

Hm.
In 2.2.9 FBTYPE_PCI_GENERIC is defined in include/asm-sparc64/fbio.h,
but not in include/asm-sparc/fbio.h. Similary for _PAGE_CACHE;
apparently atyfb.c is intended for sparc64 only; atyfb.c is compiled
iff CONFIG_FB_ATY.
I think it's yet another bug in drivers/video/Config.in.
Make sure you
I don't use Debian's kernel-source package at all. It's easy to build
the kernel using the upstream source and there are instructions in lots
of places, including in the source itself (available from
ftp.kernel.org or mirrors).
Compiling the Linux kernel is easier than partitioning a disc,

For a while I used 2.0.x and 2.2.x with the same file system on x86. I
didn't notice any major problems at the time. I haven't use

I've complained about this before!
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-sparc
contains old versions!
Can it be changed to a link to

What I usually do for testing the installation procedure is borrow my
swap partition for the purpose.
Of course that means the installation itself has to work without swap.
When I did this on a
When I first installed Debian (on Intel x86) I naively accepted the
default answer "yes" to a question about whether I wanted xdm.
Of course my computer, at the end of its booting up sequence,
triumphantly blanked the screen and "died". At the time I didn't know
anything about LILO and boot parame

First, I'll answer my own question:

The answer is quite a lot. See check_partition() in
linux/drivers/block/genhd.c for a list of the ones that Linux can
understand.
I managed to convert my previous partition table (I don't know w

Thank you, John Chapman, for telling me about the mailing list archives
and more recent boot floppies. Now I have some different problems:
This time I took resc1440.bin, root.bin and drv1440.bin from the
directory called 2.1.6-1999-02-02.
I discovered by random experimentation that to boot off "r
After searching for a long time, eventually I stumbled upon:
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/sid/main/disks-sparc/1998-12-07/
(Why isn't it easier to find boot floppies starting from
www.debian.org?)
sparc_release_note.txt says I should get root1440.bin; but I only found
root.bin, which is
