I have not been able to get a 4.x version of the XFree86 server running on my Ultra 5. The 3.3.6 server running on the 2.2 kernel (as distributed in Potato) worked fine. I assumed the problem was due to some bug(s) in the 2.4 kernel or the 4.x code in the server because the XFree86.0.log reported
