I've heard that only gcc version == egcs-2.92.11 or gcc versions >= 3.1 are suitable for compiling the kernel. I have been trying to use a more recent gcc version, but, to my surprise, I found that the versions >= 3.1 included with sid do not support 64-bit compilation. The gcc-3.0 supports 64-bit
