I found the problem and it is fixed. I downloaded xserver-common and reinstalled it and that seems to have fixed the problem. I have no idea how it got messed up in the first place but I believe it may have been that I installed a package which is now obsolete, and it wiped out /etc/X11/Xserver t

When I try to start X, I get an error saying that /etc/X11/X will not execute, so perhaps that symlink I had there pointing to the X server binary was needed. I would just remove all the X stuff and reinstall it, but I am stuck with just a command line, making things very tedious. -- Andrew

Starting with slink (Debian 2.1), if the xdm package is installed, you will boot up to the xdm login screen. To get a default console login, the simplest/cleanest way is to just uninstall the xdm package: dpkg --purge xdm The xdm script that automatically starts/stops xdm is located at /etc/init.

I see this type of behavior after lots of window open and closes with large memory consuming windows(MATLAB plots with lots of points). After a while X starts sucking up all my memory and swap. I simply restart the window manager, not restart X, and the memory is freed. So it may be a X or wind
