No, no funcionaria, solo hace que el puntero a la variable a apunte a la misma direccion de memoria que n. Pero no hay que liarse tanto :) Existen las funciones atoi y itoa, etc. en stdlib.h Si haces man atoi te salen todas las funciones de transformacion entre numeros y cadenas de caracteres.
