Instalei o pacote do ntop em duas m?quinas com Debian Woody, e
configurei-o pra pegar estat?sticas de interfaces ethernet, mas
depois de um certo tempo o seu daemon misteriosamente cai. Chequei

Cliente de ftp tem no gráfico o gftp e no console o ncftp. o gftp é
idêntico ao cuteftp (ws-ftp não conheço).

Respondendo minha propria questao, o problema estava no arquivo de
configuracao do setserial (serial.conf), i.e., apos a retirada da placa
de video PCI, a porta de i/o do modem mudou e o setserial (ou eu) nao
alterou o arquivo.
Apos alterar o arquivo e restartar o setserial, o modem funfou!
