pam and other authentication methods

Today i read that Slackware doesn't use PAM by default because of some of the leaks that pop up now and then. I was wondering what other type of authentications there are on Linux and how easy/difficult they are to set up. For instance, if i would now like to change the way users are authenticated,

Something peculiar happened. After failing to connect with ppp and kppp, I decided to try wvdial. It also failed the authorization stage. While I was doing something else, it redialed and got connected. I then decided to try the same thing with pon. It failed to connect. I followed this with poff.
