Not true. Eclipse runs fine on Debian with no SUN JDK in sight. (it can run
under gcj)

I recommend you try out gajim instead of gabber.
Gajim also supports end to end gpg encryption and is a lot nicer than
gabber. Gajim is also actively maintained,
