people use Courier

They're generally equally easy to configure. The single AGP card
may or may not be cheaper, depending on what you have lying
around.

What&
u don't want X, you can install multiport serial cards and
virtually any PC can act as a terminal, or you can acquire used
or new serial terminals. This is the cheapest route, and number
of terminals is pretty much limited by server performance.

It works, but you can buy a new 5-port 10/100 switch for $12.

Buying a crossover cable in your local store is probably more
expensive than that.

Not if you're doing a fresh install with the Sarge
debian-installer CD. SW RAID-1 was downright easy.

Non-hotswap IDE RAID is quite good.

A more reliable method would be to run your own email <-> usenet gateway,
taking in messages from the list and your users, and sending out only
messages from your users.

RequestTracker (RT) is way cool. www.fsck.com, and it's already in Debian.
(RT2 is in unstable, but you want to upgrade to 2.0.13 anyway).

Google for googlizer and (separately) for openit. Googlizer was written
by Alan Cox; openit shares most of the code.
You can probably hack ex
itch. These machines will constantly be transferring data, so I would

Completely untrue.

You probably want to remove su and replace it with sudo. Finer-grained

or Linux?
It's not the PCI interface which is a problem. It's the fact that it is
a WinModem (i.e. software modem) which depends on the host CPU to do work
for it that is an issue.
And even more to the point, the problem is that those drivers are typically
proprietary, secret, and unpublished.

You will want to recompile the kernel for SMP support; the default Debian
kernel is uniprocessor.

qmail can't do that.
What's wrong with "sudo passwd postmaster" ?

Nah. But let me point this out:
- I'm a big qmail advocate.
- He doesn't need to become a kickass postmaster. He just needs a simple
MTA.
- He runs Debian.
- Debian's default MTA is exim, and comes with a preconfiguration that
exactly matches his needs.

It is fast for mail delivery and deletion; grep works for searches because
each file is a separate message. It can be slower to load an entire folder
than mbox because it needs to grab many files instead of just one big file.

Maildir is not a package. Perhaps you mean qmail?
I would look at the qmail FAQ.
I would especially look at the bits about delivery.
