I would like to see how VirtualBox stands up against the others. It seems to
be the fastest emulator when it comes to Windows. Although this is only one
person's opinion and there is no scientific evidence it just feels faster.

Try the Gparted live cd, I believe it's only a 3MB or so download, in
any case much smaller than a full Knoppix.

You're correct on this. Although it works, it's not the nice'd solution
because my monitor(lcd) supports 1600x1200.
In my Gnome-session I can use that resolution without a problem.
And why does gdm try to use the highest resolution
this is still bugging me and their only
chance in my eyes is to come up with a very good linux offering for me
to
even look at them again.
This is how important the first line of contact is for the customer
experience.
