really want to stick with the swirl as it kicks it for most stuff, but
seems to be having some issues with netscape apps.

Did you try recreating it?
rm /etc/isapnp.*
pnpdump -c /etc/isapnp.conf
reboot
or tried a newer debian kernel like 2.2.18?

A Redhat user with the same board said he had to add:
append=x86_serial_nr=1 ide2=0x9800,0x9402 ide3=9000,0x8802
to lilo.conf to make his A7V board work. Perhaps that would work with
the UDMA66 boot disks.
