user,
but safer too? Why?
My idea is that if a message contains something malicious, such as an
image attachment that triggers a buffer overrun and exploits that, it
will provide an additional line of defense if that exploit isn't run
with root privileges.

shells, not just login shells, set
them in .bashrc.
That won't work properly for cases in which variables are extended, as
this is frequently done with PATH.

that format in place of LaTeX...?
Indeed, XML can be useful for electronic data exchange, but it's cumbersome
to write. If really necessary, I'd rather write LaTeX and then process
that to get the required XML -- should be possible, something along the
lines of latex2html.

Indeed -- use the class, i.e.
\documentclass{article}
and not \documentstyle, which is an outdated command from the times
before Latex 2e.

I don't have any experience with UML (and I just guess you mean User
Mode Linux, rather than Unified Modelling Language), but, at any rate,
simply su - should get you the standard root PATH and other environment
settings.

Personally, I like to think about Debian as a project that promotes

(1) Specify the sum symbol? It's missing from the snippet you quote, the
full spec should be:

Dear List,
I've created a set of kernel packages (-image, -source, -doc, -headers)

in a linux-source-2.6.12 directory using a copy

Thanks in advance for any info.

P.S.: Of course, my objective is not to reproduce the package that is
already available, I did this exercise to track down the problem only.
