After I exited an 'aptitude remove' that froze, dpkg has been left in an
odd state. It's parent is init so I can't 'kill -9' it however it has a
lock file which prevents me from running aptitude again.
I manually removed /var/lib/dpkg/lock and ran aptitude. Aptitude
currently appears frozen -- j

All,
I've installed anjuta from unstable on my testing box using 'dpkg
--ignore-depends anjuta'. Of course, 'aptitude upgrade' throws a
dependency error so I'm unable to upgrade. Is there an elegant way to
tell aptitude to ignore the broken dependency? I suppose I could

The suggestions provided by others already are great and I don't mean to
beat a dead horse. If you really want a straight up list for *your*
system, just `ls' /sbin, /bin, /usr/sbin, and /usr/bin. Then you can
pop open man as something in the list interests you.
Secondly, as has been mentioned a
Depending on how you configured your custom kernel, it may well work
just fine with your new board and CPU. I haven't done this, but if I
were in your situation (and my kernel didn't like my new MB), the first
thing I would try is installing a standard kernel image. The install CD

Suggestions? Thanks!

I've just installed Debian Sarge on a box I've been using as a wireless
access point for a couple of years. I've been using and am continuing
to use the hostap module on my Intersil Prisim PCI card.

Suppose I am working with three machines. I'm logged into host
"workstation" and I would like to ssh to hosts "remote0" and "remote1".
"id_dsa" and "id_dsa.pub" exist on "workstation". I've added
"id_dsa.pub" from "workstation" to "authorized_keys2" on hosts "remote0"
and "remote1". I've used "s

Charlie,
That looks like our winner. As you can see, you have three interfaces.
The "lo" interface is your loopback interface. This should be
configured with the IP address 127.0.0.1. Apparently it isn't.
The quick fix is to run "ifconfig lo 127.0.0.1" as root and you'll be
able to ping localh
Albert,
If you are running Firefox 1.0.4, you are likely running sarge/stable.
See "Debian Releases" [1] for more information on the three main
distributions. The Debian release cycle is such that every so often a
new stable release is created. Packages in stable are exactly that,
they are stable
Ricardo,
Once you have changed your background color, you may find configuring
the actual XDM login window useful. The XDM man page [1] covers a
number of X resources that will configure how the various widgets in the
login window are drawn. I believe XDM in Debian
reads /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources.
My thoughts are (1) verify cupsd.conf, (2) verify daemon is listening,
(3) verify my firewall is in fact off...
Some "important looking" sections from my cupsd.conf:

Adam,
Having rarely used gnome I'm no expert. I have found problems with
components crashing and not dying properly when exiting. bonobo and
gnome-session both come to mind as processes I've had to kill manually.

Pavel,
You can find the developer resources on the Developer's Corner[1]. Read
the New Maintainer's Guide first[2]. When debianizing your package, I
highly recommend you make use of debhelper(7) in your maintainer
scripts. Also, if you will be doing *any* patching to upstream sources,

Anders,
Our situations differ a bit, however I've found Debian's racoon package
to be quite useful. I just use it to encrypt all traffic between two
hosts that use NFS and XDMCP on my LAN. Who says NFS can't be secure in
transit? I also only use PSKs and haven't bothered with certs.

Alternatively, if you don't want to download it to the local apt archive
you can:
aptitude download foo
