But *now*, I can't even run grub-install /dev/hda without an error

Having used GRUB for many years on other systems, I decided to go
ahead and install/configure it. Here (similar to what was suggested
by another poster) is what I did:

When I boot my Dell laptop with the 2.4.18-bf2.4 kernel, my PCMCIA
card is recognized properly and I can access our local Ethernet.
When using 2.4.18-686, however, I get the following error message
during booting and the eth0 device is unknown:
