om0 -> /dev/hdd
/dev/cdrom1 -> /dev/hdc
That is, the device /dev/cdrom was pointing to the fourth "hard disk,"
not the third. We simply changed the first alias to:
/dev/cdrom -> /dev/cdrom1 (-> /dev/hdc).
Now we have nice music while we hack away.

do I get DHCP initialized; i.e., how do I get the dhcp-client files
installed into the init.d and rc*.d files?
How do I assure that the first NIC is configured by DHCP, but the other
one with static ips?
Many thanks in advance to any help you all can give me.

dia kernel "make install" didn't
add the line to /etc/modules. The nVidia folks may not have wanted to
force this at boot up. But their documentation probably should note
that one needs to add this line to get the module loaded automatically.

this should have been done by the NVIDIA kernel install process or
kmod. Any comments about this?

Really sort of nice.

Many thanks to Colin Watson. After apt-get install libncurses5-dev, make
menuconfig now works fine.

We were able to configure the kernel with xconfig. But what's with
ncurses? I am missing some history, or not understanding how I am
supposed to load ncurses now.
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment that you can give.

Thanks to Marc Wilson for his suggestion. But we can't find the vesa
