brightness (the greatest

A possible solution might then be to get the sources of apmd and make
it sleep longer before suspending. The relevant sleep call is found
in the apm_suspend function in apmlib.c.

Another package that might be popular is leafnode, for maintaining a
local news spool over a dialup line. (Or something similar.) This
particular package is small, although its implications for disk usage
are not.

that the standard debian /etc/X11/Xsession script
will source /etc/environment if it exists. If you symlink that to
/etc/profile, you can guarantee a proper environment even for users
who do not have their own ~/.xsession file.

My none-too-informed best guess is that if you fail to install X
correctly the first time round, it affects some configuration files
in ways that purging X won't recover from.

the e2compr patch to the kernel, and this did break
the pcmcia modules. Recompiling them solved that.
