Here's another Debian newbie question for yah.
I don't seem to have much in the /proc directory. In fiddling with alsa,
apm, etc, the HOWTO's will mention checking things in /proc. I go there
and there's nothing. How do I go about getting everything I possibly can
under /proc?

oundcore as a module?
If that's all that alsa is requiring, can I then just install and
configure alsa? Is there some other reason to compile a kernel? It seems
excessive to me that one would have to compile a kernel to install sound
drivers.

I want a script to be executed once at boot time, (i.e to do
/sbin/hdparm setting).
Where would this go? If I use a command like update-rc.d foo.sh default

init levels. Seems excessive to me.

I tried alsa-config and it complained about drivers and the alsa system
not being loaded. Is there a help FAQ somewhere on getting alsa running
under Debian?
That did the trick. Thanks, John.
Summary is as follows:
Problem: After upgrading to sid, ppp quit working
Diagnosis: type 'route -n' and noticed tap0 interface in the interface list.
Solution: type 'apt-get remove diald'
Thanks to everyone who helped me with this. I've gotten several emails a
out.
How do I configure Alsa? I know what changes I need, but I don't want to
mess with Debian's upgrade process -- it's too good. I installed the
driver for my sound card in the kernel successfully.

I forgot to mention one very entertaining detail of my Debian install.
About half way through my first couple of attempts the mouse would quit
working. I was cussing Debian's stupid mouse driver instability.
Right before I hit the magic combination that made Debian install
correctly, my mouse

was figuring on trying kmail and konqueror at first. I hear bad remarks
about Netscape and Mozilla all the time. What else is there?

When I had RedHat installed, my machine would auto-power off at
shutdown. It doesn't do that anymore. How can I enable this under
Debian? APM? ACPI? Do I need a certain kernel? Can I easily modify the
modules of the current one?
