Forget about "installing Gnome" and just install the specific Gnome
packages you want.
OK well since I already have Gnome installed (Lenny CD1)... I have...
apt-get remove gnome gnome-desktop-environment
Which were empty packages... and since doing this I have finally been
able to remove
f Gnome running? i.e. Panel and Alacarte only? I'm not even overly
concerned with Nautilus as I prefer Thunar. I know I could use Xfce but
until maybe version 4.8 (they're still finishing 4.6) they don't have a
proper alternative to Alacarte.

What you are proposing is that packages move from Unstable, to a Testing
alpha package, then to Testing which would be the basis of the RC's, and
then onward to Stable.
