would like to thank for your replies - it's nice to know that I'm not the only
one with a buggy system and that there is somebody working on it (Hedrik and
Abit).

- X instability?
- my hardware?
- potato instability?
The fact is that I really hate to reboot my machine - it feels like I'm running
Windows.
X is XFree86 version 3.3.6-6 (svga). Mboard is Abit BP6 (not OC'ed).

ce is. It depends on the way you configure your
system. Some will prefer to keep it in something like /etc/firewall-rules.
Personally I keep it directly under /etc/init.d as a sysV-script. From there I
can always add symbolic links to the relevant runlevels.

If youre connected to the net it's a sin to use any unencrypted connections. If
you don't believe me try logging the attempts to connect to your computer. I'm

over because I'll have to compile a lot of packeges on my own to fix the
dependencies...
I still look forward to stable and will still continue to use Debian for a
long time but some of my confidence in the chosen ones have been lost.

Take a look at arpwatch. This is the only way you can get an idea of which IP
belongs to which mac-address. But don't be to optimistic; if it's somebody on a
modem you will only be able to spot the ISP...
Good luck.

issued a kbd_mode which returned raw. Ahhh something in X changes the keyboard
mode from ASCII to raw.
Now I'm not a wizard when it comes to X so I would like to know where I can
change this behaviour? Do I have to get the source and recompile?
A quick answer would be much appreciated

are some motherboards that has buggy BIOS'. Meaning that the kernel
might crash with APM enabled. I have seen this with the Aopen AXPRO and a lot
of different labtops. If you want APM you will have to make your own kernel
but do remember not to make the APM-enabled kernel your default kernel...

the missing files/dirs from the old place to the new place. I shure hope this
is fixed when potato is released - it's not vere easy to figure these things
out if one is a newbee.
Still, fewer errors ocurred than I had expected.

Debian is /etc/rcS.d . Normally you would
put the actual script in /etc/init.d and a symlink to it from /etc/rcS.d .

You do not need to do this in Debian.

You can check your runlevel in /etc/inittab. Look for a line like this:

You can install an nfs-server on the working machine and share the CD's on
this machine. The only problem is that you're not able to change CD's whithout
stopping the nfs-service. Other than that it works fine.

Hi
I'm having some problems with /dev/dsp getting locked up (i.e. cannot write to
dsp). Is there a way to reset /dev/dsp by hand (as root)? - or do I have to
logot everytime?
