I'm not sure what's going on here exactly. I have un and reinstalled xbase
and the S3V server packages. I also tried using the SVGA server and MetroX
4.3.0, with the same results. Any ideas would be appreciated...

Not is ls, per se. I usually use the find command like this:
'find . -mode 4755 | xargs ls -l'
'man find' for more info about find.

and vertical bars of color are displayed on the screen. The
only way to get it back is to hard boot; it does not respond to pings from
remote hosts, etc.
This does not happen when I use Accelerated X 4.1. Any ideas would be
appreciated...

the right way to
fix the problem. I notice also in /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config:
DisplayManager.authDir: /var/lib/xdm
The specified directory does not exist... I've not seen this message
before, and am curious about what it means exactly.
