I have exactly the same problem. My kernel is
2.6.8-2-386 the one that comes
with the distribution. I also can not find
documentation on how to deal with
USB storage in kernels 2.6.*. The same happened me
with the audio ( I have an
old ISA soundblaster on a pentium II system, that
debian didn't detect automatically)  
, and was solved with 'modprobe sb', so maybe you only
need to do 'modprobe usb-storage'
I'm going to try this myself later.
