How to use dpkg -b ??

Hi guys, I've grabbed the source files for a package (.diff.gz, .dsc, .tar.gz) but now I don't know what to do ;) I thought the process was to use dpkg -b but that didn't work. How do I go about it? I need to customize some of the .h files, then I'd like to build the package... Can someone help
