It doesn't matter ONE-BIT. Bus speed has nothing to with a modem. Your
modem will run at a constant speed which is a lot slower than the bus will.
Either modem will perform just as well.
I would consider how easily configured it is and price, rather than bus
speed. That's the only real issue
Thanks to all who responded to my request. I'm sure I will find what I'm
looking for there.

Hi all. First a THANKS to all who have helped me out in
the past.
I am now involved in a research project at SFCC in Spokane, WA
for a computer science class, and have taken on the project of security in
operating systems. What I am doing is researching the security problems in
Windows NT
I read similar articles like this too. They are not really biased simply
because they promote Redhat's Linux. The Debian system is a collection of
high level puzzle pieces that an under-experienced user would have great
difficulty using.
On the other hand, you have Redhat and Caldera with their

I have now finally figured out the main issues (for me) concerning the Linux
install-and-get-it-running problem. Through all this, It (Linux) has simply
verified what I have always suspicioned. That is:
Bill Gates is similar to a drug dealer.
He got everyone hooked on windows, and we now must
I got the dial-up to finally work. Now my question is: Where do I find some
DNS numbers? (Like Netscape.home, Internic, etc).
Thanks for any help you can give.

I have the same problem when I start KDE.

It does dial, I hear the initial connection made, and then it quits.

Anything else I can try?

How do I install Star office? I tried dpkg and install but I can't get
anything to work. Yes, I did check the Debian FAQ. Or did I miss something?
Any ideas to help?
Thanx. Ed
Hi. I had that problem too. If it's a winmodem, forget it!
Get yourself a real modem. Debian people won't write a driver for it. MS has
a closed door policy on their code, and probably locks their developers in
it too.
Sorry.

A big THANK YOU to all who responded to my dial-up woe with the
WINModem.
I didn't realize that Windows compatible hardware would ONLY work with
Windows. I will have to get a different modem then.
I agree that drivers won't be written in LINUX for any type of WIN
hardware. There
This is a follow up to my previous message.
I guess I should have been more specific about this problem. I installed
FreeBSD 3.0 to see if it would connect, but it didn't either. Here are the
details;
1. I have MS Network. The local provider provides the IP address.
2. I cannot get the IP address
I have tried several times to establish a dial-up connection but nothing has
worked. MSN is my provider. They have a server assigned IP address. Because
of this, I'm sure it does not connect. Anybody else have this problem?
Thanx.
