Hi, I've been out of debian for a few months... I have a few questions:
For where should I point /etc/apt/sources.list?
Well, I think woody is almost stable, but I have potato dists CD's. So, I
installed potato, pointed /etc/apt/sources.list to

Well, I think qt is the better choice. I didn't realize there was an

I'm intending to develop mostly base and client-server software. So, Java

Hello, debian users.
I have a question not so specific to debian, but I'm sure you can help me.
I'm in the need of developing a multi-platform system.
Can anyone give me a hint of which tool's (libraries) to use? I'd like to
develop applications for linux(es), unix(es) and windows.

I think this kind of stuff would really do good to the debian
configuration. There's a lot of msg's at startup I cannot view with neither
dmesg nor with cat /var/log/syslog.
It's quite simple to implement (well, windows does that).
We should be able to go step-by-step from the very begining of the

It looks like win. At least, you can kill the app without rebooting.
Hope they fix these problems.

It's part of the woody (unstable) distribution. Point your
/etc/apt/sources.list to woody (unstable in place of stable, woody in place
of potato).

apt-get install libstdc++2.10 (I guess... See the package name with
apt-cache search libstdc++2.10)

I'm upgrading from potato to woody.
I already did the following steps:
1) Downloaded Woody packages (just like libstdc++2.10, kde2...), and
installed it to run under potato.

I wrote to the list a few days ago, asking if somebody could tell me how to

make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
After that, you can use make-kpkg for whatever you want.
PS: Have you tried make menuconfig, or make xconfig (under x11)? make

I think I used lp=parport0 parport=0x378,7, in my loadlin command line ...
My paralell port uses IRQ 7 under windows, so I though I should use the
same under debian.
I'll try it out(assuming that'll work with loadlin). Thanks.

I have a 20 Gb HD. The BIOS has detected it since I installed it from the
first time.
When (for some reason) I removed ATA-2 IDE support from the kernel, the
system crashed at startup. So I put back ATA-2, and it worked fine. I
though ATA-2 was for IDE HDs larger than 8 Gb.
You need to have ATA-2 IDE support compiled in your kernel. It supports IDE
HD's larger than 8 Gb. I don't know if you can have such thing in slink.

Once I use apt-get to install woody, where the .debsI just download are
kept?
I'll need them to configure another machines.
Woody upgrade:
I did't change potato to woody in sources.list, just added a new source
woody.
When I did apt-get dist-upgrade, it says that I have to upgrade 411
packages.
OK. I'll do that, but a few questions come:
1) If I update the packs, I'll have to update the kernel, too, wouldn't I?

I was thinking of this, too...
So, if I have a particular .deb file, and I want to install it, I have to
use dpkg. But if the package have dependencies and/or conflicts, which
apt-get handles very well?
Use pppconfig, instead. It's much better than wvdial.
Is there any special reason for anybody keep using wvdial?

Hi. I'm having some trouble with my ppp.
It works, but it kind of locks the applications that are trying to get
connected (mozzila, ftp and telnet).
I ran pppconfig. I'm using the default provider. I just type pon + enter and it
connects to my ISP. When I run mozzila, the
window does not appear.
Hi. I had an accident: I removed /dev/ttys1 (how stupid I am).
How can I create it again, so I can symlink to modem and use ezppp?
I think this is the right way, isn't it? The configurations of ezppp only show
