I was faced with this very same problem last night when installing gnome-desktop-environment also installed hotplug. Hotplug prevented my computer from booting.. it was hanging on some USB device and the boot sequence just stopped. How to get back into the system and remove Hotplug ? Fortunately I had a copy of Damned Small Linux on a CD.
