problem solved -- I had been editing a local .mc/mc.ext file, but had
failed to remove the .mc/bindings link ot the default bindings. After
several attempts failed, I thought I must have badly misinterpreted
the man pages, and that perhaps mc.ext did something else
entirely... anyway, it's all ok

/etc/mc/mc.ext is the place to look.
